Rock Creek's food bank is piloting a new way to serve homebound seniors in our community: home delivery of easy-to-prepare food.
Every other week, a two-person volunteer team delivers a food box directly to a senior's door. This food box will contain items like heat-and-serve meals, simple ingredients, shelf-stable food, and fresh fruit when available. We're keeping it simple on purpose: no big cooking projects, no more than a single person or couple can easily handle.
But the food is really just part of the reason for the visit. Our volunteers aren't just dropping off a box, they're stopping to say hello, check in, and pray with the person they're serving.
We're in the pilot phase!
We're starting small with around 5 to 10 households so we can learn what works before we grow this ministry. We're not yet taking general applications for the program.
Do you know a senior who's homebound and could use this?
If you know someone 65 or older who doesn't have a way to get food and doesn't have anyone who can shop or cook for them, contact the church office and let us know. We'll follow up and see how we can help. At this time, we are limiting the ministry to 5 to 10 households and will expand the ministry as opportunities allow.
Do you want to volunteer?
Go in pairs
Every delivery is done by a team of two. This is for safety and for a better visit. If you're a guy, your partner should be another guy or your wife; if you're a woman, your partner should be another woman or your husband. If you already have someone in mind you'd like to serve with, bring them along and let us know both names.
Background check required.
All delivery volunteers go through a background check before their first delivery.
When it happens.
Deliveries generally run weekday mornings/afternoons, roughly every other week.
What you'll do.
Pick up a food box (or two), and deliver to one or two homes within about a 20-minute drive of the church & we keep it to two stops per trip so the food doesn't sit too long. At each stop, spend a few minutes with the person. Say hello, ask how they're doing, see if there's anything else they need, and pray with them if they're open to it.
Go in expecting to help us figure this out.
This is a brand-new ministry, and we're still learning what works. If you like things clearly spelled out from day one, this might not be the best fit yet. If you're up for helping shape something new, we'd love to have you!
